RIDE SHARING PROGRAM EXEMPLIFIES REGIONAL COOPERATION
The article describes ridesharing initiatives in the Washington area. The Ride Finders Network, a cooperative effort involving the Council of Governments, the state and local governments of the region, the federal government, and the business community, found ridesharing arrangements for 30% of 28,000 applications. The article describes how it works. Planning and policy issues can impact ridesharing, and the COG and its Transportation Planning Board has worked to encourage the effort. Media promotion is recognized as essential for increasing the number of car pools and a regional promotional program was completed by the Network. To supplement the program, the Network has begun a Corporate Sponsor Program that gives companies and corporations the opportunity to participate in the regions ridesharing effort.
