CONTRACTOR INCREASES ROLE IN NEW ENGLAND VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
Private contractors are playing an increasingly important role in New England by helping state transportation agencies control unwanted vegetation along interstate highways and secondary roads. In many cases, these agencies are finding that private firms with finely-tuned herbicide programs offer numerous advantages. These include increased cost effectiveness, decreased liabilities, and spray programs that are state-of-the-art in terms of technology and environmental safety. Vegetation Control Services, Inc., Athol, Massachusetts, currently holds spraying contracts in Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Though the firm specializes in utility right-of-way and industrial vegetation control, it has seen a dramatic increase in roadside-related work in the past three years. The cost of keeping equipment up-to-date and employees properly trained, as well as the regulatory liabilities associated with storing and mixing herbicides, are what Vegetation Control Services sees as the factors behind the decrease in state herbicide application programs. This article provides details on the vegetation control programs in Connecticut and Vermont.
