PERMANENT LANE DROPS ON MOTORWAYS

PERMANENTE RIJSTROOKVERMINDERING IN AUTOSNELWEGEN

Geometric congestion in motorway sections begins mainly on road sections where traffic streams diverge or converge. In this report the lane drop effects on the traffic stream have been investigated. Eight different types of lane drops have been investigated. These eight are: outlying taper drop, ending of climbing lane, ending of overtaking lane, two lane entrance ramp, two lane exit ramp, exit ramp with lane drop, major diversion, and weaving section. The problems of lane drops contain traffic operational, behavioural, psychological and road safety elements. In this report the traffic operational aspects are mainly studied. Before measurements have been carried out, three hypotheses have been made about the cluster capacity in the area of influence of a lane drop: (1) cluster capacity proportional to the number of lanes; (2) capacity funnel; and (3) situations when the cluster capacity decreases below the cluster capacity of two lanes. In a second part of the report addenda are presented.
