DIVERSIFYING MOBILITY NEEDS
Japan which was criticized in the past because its cities virtually shut down early, is now moving toward becoming a nation of 24-hour cities. Whether this new trend has come about because of customer demand or proprietor choice is uncertain, but the trend is creating changes in population activities and transportation availability. Retail store owners both large and small, convenience store operators, home delivery supermarkets and Japan's internationalization are all credited with bringing about this new 24-hour mentality. With this new mentality comes the need to determine how people are to get to and from the various activities and shops which are open after what was once normal hours of operation. A late night bus service was implemented in one area, but it proved to be inadequate to handle the passenger volumes even though more buses were added after its inception. The problem of automobiles polluting and creating noise at all hours of the day and night posed another problem. Suggestion is to build parking terminals near rail or bus stations or just far enough from the residential areas so that walking would be an appropriate and preferred alternative. This new mentality presents challenges for both transportation providers and those wishing to cash in on the longer hours of activities.
