SMALL STATE, BIG PLANS
The Rhode Island geographical information system (RIGIS) was designed for land and natural resource management statewide. It was created in 1985 with a partnership agreement by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the University of Rhode Island. Since then it has evolved into a multi-agency organization involving the two founding members and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, Solid Waste Management Corporation, and Division of Planning. This article discusses the RIGIS system components and its current and future uses.
