BASIC AND APPLIED ASPECTS OF CAVITATION EROSION
Cavitation erosion is one of the limiting considerations in the design of high powered propulsion systems for large ships. In view of this fact, basic and applied aspects of the phenomena of cavitation erosion are discussed. The mechanisms of bubble collapse, parameters governing bubble collapse, intensity of bubble collapse and its relation to the intensity of erosion are briefly outlined. With the help of a non-dimensional relationship, experimental results on the effect of cavitation parameter, velocity and size and the influence of physical properties of liquids including density, vapor pressure, surface tension, gas content and sound speed are quantitatively correlated and explained. The effect of exposure period on the intensity of erosion both in corrosive and non-corrosive evironments is analyzed. Parameters governing the resistance of protective coatings are also discussed. Criteria for various failure modes of coating substrate systems including erosion, tear, adhesion loss, crushing and spalling are mentioned. Further areas of research necessary for a better understanding of this problem from a designer's points of view are recommended.
