GIS HELPS COUNTY SEE THE FOREST AND THE TREES

Grays Harbor County, Washington, decided to automate its existing manual mapping systems throughout the 1,900-sq mi county. A sophisticated geographic information system (GIS) was implemented by melding existing attribute data with the county's mapping database for planning and analysis jobs. A Manatron/Unisys software and hardware GIS was chosen. In a little over a year since delivery, the county has digitized 90 to 95% of its forestry maps and about 30% of its base maps. The work is being done by two full-time employees with the help of part-time employees. Much of the county's success to date has been because the system can rapidly implement applications, because the the county designed a well thought out and relevant GIS, and because of a positive ongoing relationship with the manufacturer's staff.
