COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SAFETY. A REPORT TO THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION BY THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

This is a report of a study that examined commercial vehicle safety issues in an effort to understand truck accidents, and identify and correct the unsafe conditions. The report notes the inadequacy of accident statistics, driver licensing, driver training, National Driver Register, Section 216 of the Motor Carrier Safety Act (1984), improved driver hours and speeds, new entrants, safety belt use, dialogue between the trucking industry and the states, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program; Trucking Industry Alliance, tractor/trailer brake research, and emergency response plans for hazardous materials accidents. Recommendations are made in each of these areas.
