THE TRANSPORTATION SERVICE NEEDS OF NON-CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT ACTIVITY CENTERS
This paper discusses the transportation roles of both planned and unplanned cluster and corridor activity centers. It uses the activity centers in Charlotte, North Carolina to examine the hypotheses emerging from the literature concerning these transportation needs. The paper also includes first a description of the four main non-CBD activity centers in Charlotte--clusters: the Southpark area and University City;--corridors: I-77 and Billy Graham/Airport, to better understand their individual and collective roles in the metropolitan region. This section of the paper provides the structural context for the second part of the paper which describes the spatial and non-spatial attributes of trips associated with the CBD and the non-CBD activity nodes. These trips are examined by spatial pattern and by type of trip.
