DESCRIPTION OF AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL IN THE CURRENT TERMINAL AIRSPACE ENVIRONMENT
The document describes Air Traffic Control (ATC) operations in busy terminal facilities, namely in Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facilities and Air Traffic Control Towers (ATCTs). TRACON facilities handle arrivals to and departures from airports and serve as the link between ATCTs and end route ATC facilities. The document describes current terminal ATC practices, ATC procedures, and controller tasks, with emphasis on TRACON arrivals. The work reported here was conducted as the first part of a Mitre Sponsored Research (MSR) project with the overall objective of identifying terminal area automation needs and defining a terminal area automation system concept.
