STAFFING, TRAINING, AND FUNDING ISSUES FOR FAA'S MAJOR WORK FORCES. STATEMENT OF KENNETH M. MEAD BEFORE THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON AVIATION, COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC WORKS AND TRANSPORTATION, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
This is the testimony of Kenneth M. Mead, Director, Transportation Issues, Resources, Community, and Economic Development Division, General Accounting Office, on major work force issues affecting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operations. Several times over the past few years the General Accounting Office has reported that FAA needs to improve its hiring and training of three work forces critical for air traffic safety--air traffic controllers, aviation safety inspectors, and maintenance technicians. This testimony reiterates these concerns and discusses a range of needed management improvements.
