AUTOMATION OF SCOUR ANALYSIS AT LOUISIANA BRIDGE SITES. FINAL REPORT

The computerized system for the organization, analysis, and display of field collected scour data is described. This system will enhance the current manual procedure of accomplishing these tasks. The system accepts input from the user, and based on user specification, allows the data to be organized and viewed in a variety of formats. These include cross sections from scour measurements at selected locations upstream or downstream of the bridge, longitudinal profiles through a selected pier, or the temporal history of maximum scour activity within a given specified area near the bridge. The data may be viewed in tabular as well as graphical formats. In addition, the available scour data in four bridge sites were analyzed and used to develop regression equations which relate long-term channel degradation at these bridge sites to flow and geometric variables. These equations were incorporated into the computer system such that the user may input desired hypothetical discharges and states and the system will compute the resulting long-term scour. This hypothetical value is then added to the scour activity graphs so the hypothetical bottom elevation can be compared to the existing bottom and critical pier elevations. Various digital hydrographic survey equipment systems were also investigated and recommendations are made with regard to possible future purchases.
