A TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMUNICATION RATING SCALE (TSCRS) WITH GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING AND TESTING A SAFETY MESSAGE

This booklet introduces a Traffic Safety Communication Rating Scale (TSCRS). The 25 item scale is designed for use by those who are responsible for producing and/or using traffic safety communications but who are not communication specialists. It can be used to refine and sharpen a traffic safety communication's focus and to consider all the important variables in the communication process. It can also serve as an evaluation checklist for determining possible weaknesses or strengths in the communication design. The TSCRS items (as pairs of antithetical statements) are divided into five categories: Message, Audience, Communicator (or sponsor), Technique, and Outcome. Each category contains five items, to be rated on a five-position scale ranging from +2 to -2. The algebraic sum of the ratings of the five items constitutes the subscore for the category. The algebraic sum of the subscores for the five categories it the total score.
