PERFORMANCE OF PARALLEL HIGHWAY NOISE BARRIERS, YONGE STREET TO BAYVIEW AVENUE TORONTO

The measured sound level reductions produced by 3m high parallel highway noise barriers are presented in the report and compared with calculated noise reductions. A good agreement was obtained between measured and calculated noise barriers using a calculation for single barriers. No significant barrier performance degradation due to the opposing barrier was observed; this was thought to be due to the fact that they are relatively low and about 74m apart. The two barriers produced a 4 dba average sound level reduction adjacent to the freeway, while at more distant locations the average sound level reduction was about 1 -2 dba. The report also provides data on experimental (measurement) error and comments on the difference in barrier attenuation achieved for different statistical descriptors. (TRRL)
