THE EFFECT OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT ON THE ECONOMY OF THE COMMUNITY
JOUKKOLIIKENTEEN VAIKUTUS YHTEISON TALOUTEEN
The report shows that the number of passengers using public transportation has decreased in most Finnish towns. This is mainly due to the increasing number of cars. The effect of fares is very small on the mode choice of car users. For towns, the most economical way of supporting public transportation would be to invest in traffic technical measures that favour public transports. The lowering of fares is detrimental to the transport entrepreneur, but advantageous to the state and the municipality. If the goal is to reduce traffic volumes, parking and car use should be restricted in town centres. (TRRL)
