ALCOHOL PREVENTION. BACKGROUND, PRACTICE AND POLICY
ALCOHOL PREVENTIE. ACHTERGRONDEN, PRAKTIJK EN BELEID
Alcohol consumption has increased in the Netherlands since the second world war by more than 300% within 25 years. This alcohol consumption has become a serious threat for public health and causes many social problems like traffic accidents and violations. As a countermeasure the government has developed a policy to decrease the use of alcohol. The publicity campaign "alcohol breaks more than you want" is one of the results of this policy. The policy is aimed not only at people, but also at organizations working in alcohol prevention. The book is written by nineteen experts engaged in alcohol prevention in the Netherlands and presents firstly a historical and theoretical background of the problems and prevention of the use of alcohol. Countermeasures against alcoholism which could be utilized by practical questions are then considered, like the possibilities for the authorities, social organizations and professionals.
