TELESHOPPING: EFFECTS ON BEHAVIOUR AND SPACE

TELESHOPPING: TIJD EN RUIMTEEFFECTEN

There is an increasing usage of videotex systems and among them teleshopping is becoming more predominant. In the Netherlands (and in other countries) there is little information about the effects of teleshopping on behaviour. In order to obtain more information about this a postal interview of 150 James telesuper customers was carried out in amstelveen, a Dutch town. Two main motives for the use of teleshopping were mentioned by most interviewees: greater comfort, no need for carrying (74%) and the saving of time (47%). The researched group of teleshoppers mainly consisted of older single people and of young people who are either married or living together. A smaller part of the group of teleshoppers consisted of young working single people and of "traditional" family households (working man, non working woman, children). Beside using teleshopping for daily products people continued to run errands to shops. The total number of shopping trips appeared to have decreased, but there was not a clear substitution of other activities during the time saved. (Author/TRRL)
