STAYSAFE 12: FROM THE JOINT STANDING COMMITTEE UPON ROAD SAFETY CONCERNING BICYCLIST SAFETY
In response to advertisements calling for submissions on bicyclists' safety, the committee received 115 formal submissions, and much supplementary advice, seeking changes in the way bicycling is practised and administered in New South Wales. From these submissions and communications, from the examination of selected witnesses, and from published reports and reports of inquiries on behalf of other governments, staysafe has identified many opportunities to improve the safety of bicycling. The staysafe committee was particularly concerned at indications that the number of bicyclist fatalities is increasing, and that the substantial magnitude of the bicyclist injury problem had been grossly underestimated by authorities responsible for bicyclists' safety. Recommendations are made in the areas of: collection and analysis of appropriate statistics; education; testing of bicyclist proficiency; law enforcement; bicycle helmets; traffic regulations; safety accessories and registration; and roads for bicyclists. The cover title of the report is staysafe 12: bicycle safety. (TRRL)
