JUVENILE DRIVING - UNDER THE INFLUENCE: EVALUATION OF EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION IN CHANGING KNOWLEDGE ATTITIDES AND BEHAVIORAL INTENTIONS CONCERNING DRINKING/DRUGGED DRIVING. DISSERTATION
The Contra Costa County educational program for juveniles found guilty for driving under the influence is evaluated. The program model includes curriculum and activities to address 5 reinforcing and enabling factors. The factors are alternatives, life skills, information, peer pressure, and normative beliefs. One hundred fifteen juveniles participated in the program. Pre- and post-testing of participants was conducted as well as collection of qualitative data. Participants had a significantly lower number of second offenses compared to non-program participants and to juveniles found guilty in previous years when no educational program was available. Four alternative explanations for this are examined. It is concluded that this educational program has mediated the impact of the laws regarding driving under the influence, resulting in improved knowledge, attitudes, behavioral intention and lower second offenses. The results on second offenses are suggestive but not fully conclusive due to the non-random selection of participants, however; the results can be accepted with reasonable caution.
