SAFETY AND DESIGN OF UNSIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS IN FRANCE. INTERSECTIONS WITHOUT TRAFFIC SIGNALS, PROCEEDINGS OF AN INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP, 16-18 MARCH 1988, BOCHUM, WEST GERMANY
Extensive studies and experiments have recently been conducted in France, with the aim of developing new concepts and criteria for junction design, with special reference to the conditions for better safety. This paper presents the principal results of these researches, and surveys the state of development of French guidelines for major/minor intersections and roundabouts. This work should be considered in the context of more coherent policies of road design and improvement, especially in the framework of programmes for improving existing roads; here, priority is given to safety and quality of service objectives, by taking better account of the behaviour and needs of drivers. Present developments in intersection design attempt to achieve both safe and economical layout, by reducing some of the complexity of intersections and at the same time making them more visible and easier to perceive. Further research now being carried out includes in-depth analyses of accident mechanisms and driver behaviour, with the aim of identifying risk patterns more precisely and taking preventive precautions in potentially hazardous areas.
