TIME DEPENDENT BEHAVIOUR OF NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED CLAY IN THICK HOLLOW CYLINDER TESTS ---INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RHEOLOGY AND SOIL MECHANICS, 12-16 SEPTEMBER 1988, COVENTRY, UK
Pressuremeter tests in normally consolidated clays have been simulated in the laboratory by expanding a thick hollow cylinder of soil, prepared with known stress history, using an increasing internal pressure and keeping the external pressure constant. Different stress control and strain control expansion techniques have been used, and in addition to stress and strain measurements at the cavity boundary, pore water pressures at the cavity boundary and within the soil mass have been monitored. The experimental data shows similiar trends to finite element predictions based on critical state soil mechanics with the inclusion of both consolidation (Biot) and creep (singh and Mitchell). The results presented form a useful database for assessing the performance of rheological models.(a) for the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD 818664.
