DECK CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES ---PRE CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS 3RD IRF MIDDLE EAST REGIONAL MEETING. TOWARDS BETTER ROAD PERFORMANCE, RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA, 13-18 FEBRUARY 1988. 6 VOLUMES.

The paper briefly discusses some of the deck construction techniques as relevant to various site conditions. Because of the vastness of the subject only some of the more interesting details are mentioned here. Free cantilever method of construction, using cast in-situ as well as precast segments is discussed in some detail. Two techniques for construction of continuous prestressed concrete bridge superstructures, one particularly suited in case of tall supports, are also outlined. The use and importance of temporary structures (e.g. Launching girders), the planning of precasting yards and casting beds and the sequential operation at each stage of the launching of precast prestressed concrete girders by a typical launching girder are described in some details. Stress is placed on the need for the designer of the permanent structure to understand the working details of the actual construction work. The importance of understanding the planning and working of the construction gear usually referred to as temporary structures, cannot be over-emphasized. For the covering abstract of the proceedings see IRRD 817883.
