SOME PROBLEMS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT CLAY ---PRE CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS 3RD IRF MIDDLE EAST REGIONAL MEETING. TOWARDS BETTER ROAD PERFORMANCE, RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA, 13-18 FEBRUARY 1988. 6 VOLUMES.

The construction of highways on embankments in soft ground conditions usually results in problems with their stability and settlement. This paper presents the difficulties encountered and failures experienced during the construction of such a highway on embankments of varying heights and subject to such conditions. The preloading technique has not always proved to be successful under these conditions; since lateral displacement of bridge foundation piles had been found to have taken place due to the surcharge brought about by the preloading of embankments in the adjacent area. The use of a piled raft foundation and light weight superstructure in lieu of an embankment comprised one of the remedial measures adopted to improve the stability of the highway embankment.(a) for the covering abstract of the proceedings see IRRD 817883.
