RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN FLEET MANAGEMENT IN ONTARIO'S MINISTRY OF TRANSPORTATION

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation maintains a fleet of vehicles and equipment consisting of some 16,000 pieces valued at over $111 million. Annual maintenance costs for the fleet average $23.5 million and $7 million is spent each year on fuel. In addition, $28 million is spent annually for the lease and rental of additional equipment from the private sector. The ministry has two basic fleet management objectives: 1) to get the right piece of equipment to do the job at the right place at the right time in the right (safe) condition to do the job, and 2) to mimimize the sum of money spent on acquisition, lease, rental, repair and fuel costs less the money recovered through the sale of surplus or obsolete equipment.
