GUTS, TECHNOLOGY BOLSTER COLD WEATHER CONSTRUCTION
The progress of cold weather construction in the United States is discussed, and wintertime highway construction tips are offered in this article. Specifications from 11 states were reviewed to determine which operations are performed in the winter. The placement and compaction of soils under below-freezing conditions is discussed. In the area of concreting, the successful use of water-reducing agents, super plasticizers and accelerators is noted. The driving of foundation and sheet piling in the winter, the problems of winter erection of bridges, and the heating of water and aggregate in cold weather is also discussed. The successful placing of asphalt paving below 32 deg F is described. Comments are also made regarding productivity of construction workers in cold weather.
