BRIDGES '89 FOCUS. SPEC CHANGES ALTER STEEL BOLT USE
Significant changes in the erection of structural steel may result from changes to the standard Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 major high-strength bolts. From the point of view of assembly and inspection, the most significnt changes impact requirements for installation tightening. Slip-critical connections, and connections subject to direct tension, are required to be fully tensioned, and inspected to ensure that a prescribed, minimum level of pretension is achieved. Most shear/bearing connections need not be tightened to this prescribed pretension but be tightened adequately to pull all connected material into firm contact, termed snug fit. Other changes are noted and include the following: snug tight; full tensioning; tension calibration devices; calibrated wrench method.
