CALIBRATION CHAMBER TESTS OF A CONE PENETROMETER IN SAND. DISCUSSION
The discusser, M. Fahey of the University of Western Australia, disscusses the limitation of calibration chamber tests for investigations of in situ testing devices, particularly boundary conditions. Equations for cylindrical cavity expansion are also discussed. Discussers K. Been, D. Horsfield, and M.G. Jefferies of Canada point out that the mean normal stress which effectively makes horizontal stress twice as important as vertical stress, provides a consistently satisfactory normalization for calibration chamber test data. The difficulties in dealing with complex boundary value problems in a purely empirical fashion are noted. This is followed by the author's reply.
