EDOUARD PHILLIPS (1821-89) AND THE IDEA OF CENTRIFUGE MODELLING

This is a biography to commemorate the centenary of the death of Edouard Phillips who was associated with the Paris Exposition of that year. Born in 1821, he was educated in the Ecole Polytechnique and published his first paper in 1845 in the Anales des Mines. His career moved rapidly and he became professor of mechanics and mining exploration at the Ecole des Mineurs de Saint-Etienne. In 1868 he was elected to the Paris Academy as a successor to Leon Foucault. Throughout his career, Philips published regularly. From 1859 until his death he devoted much of his effort to the solution of problems in watch and clock springs, contributing much in the field of horology. An 1868 publication on the centrifugal force in timekeeping mechanisms is noted. Extracts from some of his publications (in French) are quoted.
