BREAKING THE SPEED BARRIER IN EUROPE
This article discusses the proposed European high-speed intercity operating system, referred to as the Trans-Euro-System (TES). The system will encompass the high-speed lines currently being built in Italy, the Federal Republic of Germany, Spain and France. Within this system, the link via Brussels from the two subsystems in France and the Federal Republic of Germany has top priority. Other new shunts or extensions that might be developed and the connections between the system and other lines outside it are also considered in this article. This article is an update of an earlier article entitled "TES: Towards a European High-Speed Rail Network" that appeared in Rail International, April 1986.
