COVERED BRIDGE RESTORATION THROUGH ARTIFACT RESEARCH
Recently there has been considerable interest in restoring the few remaining American covered bridges for historical value and public enjoyment. This article discusses how the artifact, the surviving bridge, provides basic data for both the historian of technology and the restoration engineer dedicated to historic bridge preservation. Among the bridges mentioned are the designs of Theodore Burr (1771-1822), those of Lemuel Chenoweth (born in 1811), and those of Steven Harriman Long (1784-1864).
