PAVER'S 39-FT. SCREED SPEEDS BASE PLACEMENT
Using two wheel loaders to supply native sand and gravel aggregate to an asphalt paver's 39-ft-wide tamping bar screed for placing the subbase for three new taxiways at the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport kept production rates very high with a minimum crew size. The taxiways will connect two existing runways and provide access to the new mid-field terminal, scheduled to open in 1992. The 15-in. subbase is being placed in two lifts, topped by a 7-in. lift of cement-treated base. A 15-in. finish concrete slab will be placed on the 75-ft-wide taxiways. Details of the subbase construction are contained in this article, along with a description of a new ABG vibratory roller being used for subbase compaction.
