STATE OF THE INDUSTRY: C&S IN 1989: VIEW FROM THE TRACKS

Different railroads across the country are reviewed to show how communications and signalling systems fared during 1989. The importance of train control was made even more manageable through the use of computer aided dispatching; weather remained a problem when lightning destroyed signal equipment in Florida leading to the decision to install solid-state lightning protection devices and to eliminate all pole lines by 1990 while others opted to sign up for a weather reporting service called "Weather Data" to receive early warnings of inclement weather; solid-state interlockings; and detectors which alert personnel of bearings which need to be replaced before they begin to produce heat and burn off were yet another option. The question of automatic train control systems still exists with a number of smaller lines not willing to venture out on their own, but prefer to wait and see how the larger lines handle this system.
