CROSSING SAFETY--PART II: FUNDING NEEDS ESCALATE

The fate of railroad grade crossing safety hangs in the balance as the Section 130 (203) program of the Highway Trust Fund which currently calls for a Federal 90 percent, local 10 percent matching fund formula nears its 1991 expiration. A recent study carried out by the Department of Transportation cites the need for increased funds in this area and provides a monetary break down as to the allocation of funds for various rail-highway categories.
