THE NIMBY SYNDROME
The opponents of highway and other construction projects near their homes have created a new acronym for themselves - NIMBY, or Not-In-My-Back-Yard. The movement is slowing down efforts to rebuild our infrastructure. Motivated by fear of the effects of these projects on their neighborhoods, people join campaigns, hire lawyers to file class-action suits, and take to the streets in protest. The result is lengthy project delays and increased costs. Often the opposition succeeds in halting the project altogether. With burgeoning infrastructure needs, something must change or the nation may face paralysis. Many examples are included in this article.
