CROSSING SAFETY--PART I: FEDERAL FUNDS IN JEOPARDY?
Funds dedicated to grade crossing improvements from the Section 130(203) money of the Highway Trust Fund are given credit for saving some 5,000 lives and preventing 20,000 injuries. Despite these facts, industry officials are weary that the renewal program will be weakened because the study released by the Department of Transportation merely states that a sharp increase in total expenditures will be needed over the next fifteen years to maintain and improve the crossing safety record while neither recommendations to continue the Section 130(203) program nor strengthening the current program are included in it.
