HOW COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY AIDS IN MEASURING RAIL WEAR

Described is Canadian National's ORIAN machine-vision system which measures rail head height, rail head width and the field side metal flow every 30 ft and determines a full rail head profile every 210 ft while testing at speeds of up to 60 mph. The system is used to measure rail wear onboard a track geometry vehicle and relies on the car's odometer for accurate positioning and provides a real time print out of a rail wear report.
