HOW TO COST-JUSTIFY TRAINING

Many trucking company executives believe that the Commercial Driver's License, insurance premiums and market pressures will soon make it necessary for fleets to increase their commitment to training. According to the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), to satisfy future driver demand, carriers will be forced to hire persons with inadequate skills and use training to mold them into the kind of employees they want. ASTD recommends that employers set an ultimate goal of spending 4% of payroll for training. Few companies can quantify the benefits of their training programs. One reason is that the cost savings are rarely readily apparent, but another reason is the difficulty in identifying which factors resulted in the lower costs. Examples are provided of companies where training resulted in cost reductions which were abled to be determined because cost information was analyzed and training targeted toward certain areas. Carriers can expect to see an increasing number of shippers requiring their vendors to have quality systems, where training is part of a whole program that includes hiring and reward systems, as well as a management commitment to achieving quality in every aspect of a company's operations.
