WEB CRUSHING - A REVIEW OF RESEARCH
The design requirements for web crushing in various countries are reviewed, the design rules are compared with available test data, and an experimental investigation is described and the results are presented of the web crushing strength of beams with ducts in the web. The results of the study indicate that web crushing is a very variable phenomenon and that the current design rules give a lower bound to the test results. It is demonstrated that the web crushing clauses in the British Standards Institution specification CP110 provide a reasonable level of safety. However, it has been suggested that beams with deep webs (depth greater than 10 times the web breadth) may tend to buckle and that some correction factor should be applied to the maximum allowable shear stresses. Coments are also made on certain other clauses of the CP110, and on the tests on prisms with ducts passing through.
