DRUG KNOWLEDGE (PRESCRIPTION, OVER-THE-COUNTER, SOCIAL). YOUNG ADULT CONSUMERS AT RISK?

Willingness to use marijana and alcohol before driving an autmobile is declining among high school students. For 6 consecutive years, 30,000 11th graders in Pennsylvania public schools answered questions regarding their situational use of marijuana and beer. The results showed an 11 % decrease in willingness to drive after using marijuana or alcohol. The researchers offer a number of explanations for the trend: increased media presentation of the negative aspects and health consequences of alcohol and drug use, efforts of activist groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, changes in social attitudes towards drinking and driving, and school-based educational programs. While public information and tougher laws on alcohol-impaired driving appear to have had an effect on this age group, it is less clear exactly who in this group has been affected. Those who are less willing to drink and drive could be the binge drinkers, the less excessive drinkers, or some of both.
