MANAGING FOR INCREASED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION INNOVATION

This paper, which is intended for senior managers in small or medium sized firms or the operations manager in larger firms, describes managerial actions to increase innovation in design and construction firms and in public and private owners. It is based on findings from an investiation of processes for innovation in design and construction. Investigations of innovation management are reviewed. The need to maitain a strategic vision of technology is noted, as well as ways of developing it. The need to take a broad view of risk is discussed, and the importance of providing technological challenges and leadership for innovation is pointed out. The fostering of ubriddled planning, prompt internal and external integration, and the formulation and implementation of technology strategies are also discussed. It is noted that managers can make a large difference in a firm's ability to innovate, and the concept of technology strategies offers a way to help make innovation a systematic part of managing design and construction firms.
