HIBIC: EXPERT SYSTEM FOR HIGHWAY BRIDGE DYNAMICS
A design approach is proposed which relies on an expert system, HBIC (highway bridge impact consultant) that an engineer can consult when designing a bridge. The problem of analyzing a highway bridge under moving traffic load is described. A finite element methodology using the dynamic stiffness influence coefficient (DSIC) concept is developed and used to obtain bridge response statistics given a quantitative description of the moving traffic load. A prototype expert system is built that integrates the numerical methodology into its symbolic knowledge base. The response statistics from the numerical design analysis are returned to the expert system, which uses them to predict a value for the impact factor. This approach is illustrated with an example problem involving a 70-ft single-span, composite steel girder/concrete deck bridge traversed by truck traffic.
