FAST TRACK, INSTANT TRACK

The article describes how the swing span on a railroad bridge with a lift span was replaced in less than 72 hours. The span operates with two 200 hp synchronized motors that can be used alone or in tandem. Operation is automatic. The new center span (the longest and probably the heaviest in the world) for the 82 year old bridge was fabricated in a nearby yard, floated into position, and put in position. The details of the installation are summarized. One of the keys to getting the span into place and balanced was that its exact weight as built was known. Four of the five separate pontoon sections that make up the drydock were used for assembling the superstructure, but only two were needed for its transport, giving full time use of the other two to remove the old swing span during changeover.
