SLIT DAM DESIGN FOR DEBRIS FLOW MITIGATION

This technical note presents guidelines for the design of slit dams as well as selecting reasonable sites for their location. Placement of these dams above culverts may prevent damage and clogging of the culvert in the event of a small debris flow. The height of the dam is dependent on the channel slope, and the spacing of the slits is dependent on the size of the culverts being protected. The dams may be placed in series where greater trapping is necesary; this will provide greater management of the larger events in both trapping boulders and in retarding the flow. The effectiveness of a slit dam or a series of slit dams decreases as the volume of the debris flow increases. The dam will also fail to provide protection if it is not maintained following each debris flow event. Slit dams are advantageous in areas where only secondary road culverts need to be protected.
