ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCKS SCALE SLICK IOWA GRADES
An Iowa contractor overcame saturated site conditions with articulated dump trucks (ADTs) on a northern Iowa highway job. The six-wheel drive ADTs kept down not only fuel consumption, but undercarriage and tire wear as well. The 80-mile two-lane State Highway 20 between Dubuque and Waterloo is being replaced by a new four-lane State Highway 520. The two Caterpillar D350C ADTs hauled dirt and fill for two interchanges where grade elevation on the on- and off-ramps is 2%. The 260-hp three-axle trucks have a 35-ton capacity and operating weight of 51,400 lb. This article discusses the earthmoving operations, with special emphasis on the performance of the ADTs.
