PARKING GARAGES GET POLYMER CONCRETE REPAIRS
The total rahabilitation is described of five corroded, cast-in-place parking structures in the Bronx, New York. Major repairs were needed on the concrete floor substrates, columns and overhead beams to ensure future structural integrity. The project, which covered 500,000 sq ft, had damaged concrete removed, substrates and reinforcing steel repaired, reinforcing steel protected, concrete restored, and concrete surfaces protected. The repair materials used for the restoration had excellent bond to substrate, thermal compatibility to the substrate, permeability to gases and aggressive chloride ions, shrinkage compensating mortar preventing cracking even when appliled in 4-in lifts, and durability to resist freeze/thaw cyclical attack. Among the surface sealers being considered to improve durability of the concrete is a penetrating silane-siloxane sealer prime coat and pigmented acrylic top coat. The primer is specially formulated and has low volatility.
