DOCTORS FOR ROAD SAFETY

This article emphasizes the view that accidents are a health problem, and the need is noted for increased cooperation among disciplnes in the control of injury. There is an information gap on accident causes and biomechanics that must be filled before effective countermeasures can be developed. More funding is needed to initiate paramedic training programs. Programs to change driver atttudes and driving skills of the aged are needed. There is need for a surveillance system to evaluate the effectiveness of these countermeasures. Given the growing number of individuals and agencies involved in injury control, there is a need for coordination of efforts through an indepenent agency. The formation in Quebec of a 32-disciplinary group of concerned experts to address the problem of road injury is noted.
