DEVELOPMENTS OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY
The influence of database management systems (DBMS) during the 1970s is discussed, and it is noted that the rapid developments during recent years in areas such as distributed processing and expert systems, continue to shape GISs of the next generation. The various hardware and software issues related to the architecture of a GIS are examined. It is noted that computer size and hardware cost will continue to drop, that software development cost will continue to rise, and computer resources will become more distributed. It is also expected that application software wll become more integrated into computer.
