OPTIMIZATION OF IMPERFECTION-SENSITIVE STRUCTURES
In this study, the equilibrium states of the structure with shape imperfections are isolated and investigated by means of a perturbation series expansion. The analysis leads to the solution of an eigenvalue problem for its dominant eigenvalue. It allows the consideration of quite general imperfection patterns and the proper simulation of their stochastic nature, within a realistic optimization environment. A general description of this method for the stability and analysis of imperfection sensitive structures is presented. The method is illustrated with its application to the stability analysis of a finite column on a linear elastic foundation. The optimization of the column on a linear elastic foundation is then investigated.
