This article discusses concrete cracking problems and the use of Type K cement as one possible solution. The history and success of using Type K specifications and construction procedures and other special uses of Type K cement are also discussed. The following general conclusions from studies to date of the effectiveness of Type K cement concrete in bridge decks are presented: Type K cement concrete has virtually eliminated transverse cracking when properly cured; Type K cement concrete has been used successfully by ready-mix producers and contractors when a few simple procedures are followed; and Type K cement concrete may be less permeable than concrete made with other cement and the same mix design, which may add life to the bridge deck by preventing reinforcing steel corrosion.
