BUS TERMINALS. LOCALIZATION AND DESIGN

BUSSTERMINALER. LOKALISERING OCH UTFORMNING

This report is based on the results of studies, carried out at the dept of urban transport planning, chalmers university of technology in 1983-87. Advice and examples are given for the localization and design of different types of bus terminals, e.g. Master planning for public transport, management of bus service, design of terminal ground and buildings, and equipment for the service for and information to the passengers. Safety and security matters are taken up, also adaption for the disabled and the environmental aspects. The conclusions can be summed up as: a bus terminal should make it easier for travelling by offering: - excellent service and comfort, -high safety and security, - a good working place, -an attractive environment. To reach these objectives, the bus terminals must be an integrated part of: -the travel chain, -the service system of the community, -the urban area, -the transport company. If the bus terminal cannot fulfil these requirements, it will have a negative effect on travel in itself, and on the attraction of the public transport as a whole. It is therefore a need for a renewal of the most of the existing bus terminals today.
